Possums Welcome is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit organization incorporated with the California Secretary of State in Sacramento since June of 2016. Our Board is comprised of compassionate people who want to make the world a better place and bring the wonderful experience of an animal sanctuary accessible to more people. Our goal is to find a piece of land near the coast of Northern California and open an animal sanctuary which would also serve as a community center with weekly teach-ins with humanitarian and philanthropic educational talks. We are working towards an Animal Sanctuary and Educational Retreat Venue off the coast of California. This site contains our vision and goal of what we want to share with you.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
The specific purpose of this corporation is to educate people so that they may 1) become aware of, and learn to preserve, wildlife and open space, 2) help mend the environment, 3) care for and be kind to animals and vulnerable species, as well as to help people develop and improve themselves to become conscious active agents for items 1-3 above. This education includes, but is not limited to, organic, sustainable living, farming and food systems, aging animal care, and the impact of animal agriculture on our environment.
OUR HISTORY
The founder of Possums Welcome is Christine who practices Animal Law and has done so since 2000 and counting. Throughout her law practice, she has encountered the adversarial side in her quest for animals rights: A City or County who fight in Court to kill a dog for merely "looking" vicious, the neighbors who poison their neighbors' dogs, or kills her cats, the police who shoot dogs,...the list goes on and on. It is now time to work in an arena where she could see animals experiencing the positive aspects of life and then sharing that with the world. This is where we started.
THE INSPIRATION
The drive up and down Highway 1 between Northern and Southern California is very special to me. When I went to college at Berkeley, I used to drive it frequently to go home and see my family in Southern California and loved the drive. I loved the views of the ocean and the clean air. I loved the breathtaking sites from the cliffs of Big Sur and seeing the coast when you curved way out to what seemed like the edge of California. I always wanted to make this drive last even longer so I would stop at the cute shops along the way, the Cafes, the Inns, the art shops, the spas... I loved it all. The drive was experiential and also productive.
THE GOAL Then, there is my love of animals - and to see living beings happy in their natural environments. I would often drive hours out to animal sanctuaries and think how wonderful the sanctuaries are and how most people never get to experience them because they are located so far off the beaten track. And so then I decided, wouldn't it be great to have a sanctuary off my favorite route. We also envisioned a small vegan organic cafe and small B&B at the animal sanctuary so that people could have a more experiential educational experience. So envision: An animal sanctuary, and also a venue for education as well, a small cafe and a charming B&B, a place to rest your head to stay longer. I want more people to experience what it is like to visit the sanctuaries that I have been so luckly to visit. Currently, the sanctuary and educational venue will be the non-profit component and I am deciding whether or not the small Cafe and B&B will be a separate for-profit entity. At this juncture, the nonprofit component is the Sanctuary and educational meeting forum for workshops.
The topics of our weekly guest speakers would include, but certainly not be limited to: Yoga Vegan Cooking Organic Gardening Self Care Breathing Meditation Environmental Stewardship Water Conservation Open Space Art
The goal of the nonprofit is to provide community and education in a cruelty free environment in the hopes that our lifestyle will spread into different homes and practices.
